“To all who come to this happy place: welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relieves fond memories of the past…and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts which have created America…with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” Walt Disney
Disneyland opened on July 17th, 1955 in Anaheim, California to invited guests and the media. Unfortunately, the park opened with quite a few problems. Around 15,000 guests were invited and over 28,000 showed up. The asphalt was poured that morning so the ladies shoes sank into the ground, causing heel marks you can sometimes see in the ground today. Due to a plumbers strike, the water wasn’t running in the park, so Walt had to choose between toilets and drinking water, for obvious reasons he chose the toilets. It was also over 100 degrees outside so many people thought turning off the drinking fountains was to force them to buy sodas in the park. Because of the big fiasco of the days events, they labeled the day “Black Sunday”.
Today, it consists of 8 lands which include, Main Street USA, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Mickey’s Toontown, Frontierland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, and Adventureland. It remains one of the most popular theme parks in the world second only to Walt Disney World.
